In other words, what this test is really measuring is the "judgment" to annihilate problems with estimation or mental arithmetic. Every second you spend poking at a calculator is precious time that should be spent on harder problems.
The reason the two tests feel so different in score comes down to how the CAT (Computer Adaptive Test) mechanism works.
GMAT Focus is "per-question" adaptive. Every question is graded right or wrong on the spot; a correct answer raises the difficulty of the next, a wrong answer lowers it. Your final score is determined by "how difficult a question you reached." In other words, the higher your score, the harder every problem gets, so you spend the entire test feeling like you can't solve anything. I felt confident of hitting my target score in every Prep session — then absorbed an emotionally devastating blow on every actual sitting. Many test-takers struggle with this gap between Prep and the real thing.
GRE is "per-section" adaptive. Quants is split into a first and second section; your first-section score determines the difficulty band of the second. Your score is then calculated from your performance across the entire second section. Thanks to this structure, your gut feeling after the test and your actual score tend to line up fairly well. You can also skip a question in the GRE and return to it later, so you're not forced to fixate on one problem — you can keep the big picture in view.
Once you've learned the basic math knowledge and the English vocabulary for math, my personal sense is that GRE Quants feels somewhere between a middle-school final exam and the first guided problem in a national university entrance exam. If you're a STEM graduate who wants to lock in a reliably high Quants score, I personally feel the GRE more faithfully reflects your actual ability.
A weapon called "calculation vision"
For Quants prep, I actually picked up just one reference book — and it wasn't a GMAT/GRE guide.
It was "Keisanryoku wo Tsuyoku Suru" (Strengthen Your Calculation Ability) by Satoshi Kagimoto, from the Bluebacks series. I doubt many MBA applicants use this book, but I'm convinced it's the single most essential volume for Quants prep.
What the book trains is the perspective you need to find the right approach — "calculation vision."
Let me give an example. Can you mentally compute 28 × 25?
Most people would reach for long multiplication. But what if you decomposed it like this?
28 × 25 = 28 × (100 ÷ 4) = (28 ÷ 4) × 100 = 7 × 100 = 700
That calculation can be done instantly in your head.
One more: 48 × 75?
48 × 75 = 48 × (300 ÷ 4) = (48 ÷ 4) × 300 = 12 × 300 = 3,600
This is "calculation vision" — not multiplying numbers as they are, but developing the ability to "see" them in a form that's easy to compute. Once you have this ability, the number of times you reach for a calculator on GMAT/GRE Quants drops dramatically.
Six months of sharpening "calculation vision" on license plates
After learning the basics of calculation vision from that book, I built up the training in everyday life.
At the time, my commute for work was an hour and a half each way by car. I used that commute time to run mental-math drills on the license plates of passing cars for nearly six months straight. "12-34" meant 12 × 34; "56-78" meant 56 × 78 — I did nothing but mental math, day after day, for half a year.
As a result of that unglamorous training, my calculation vision got "ripped," and on every sitting of the GRE Quants I scored 170 — a perfect score.
No special prep school. No expensive coaching course. One Bluebacks book and daily license-plate arithmetic. That's all.
Advice for humanities graduates
If you read this far and thought "I majored in humanities, so it's hopeless" — not at all.
The math knowledge required for GMAT/GRE Quants is mainly middle-school to early-high-school level. Calculus doesn't appear. What you need is a foundation in arithmetic and algebra plus the "solution templates" for high-frequency patterns like speed-distance-time, ratios and concentrations, and compound interest.
"Strengthen Your Calculation Ability" is especially recommended for humanities students. The early chapters train the basics of mental math ability; the later chapters systematically explain how to dispatch precisely these high-frequency problems.
The GRE also requires prep for geometry problems, but those are mainly about learning "English math vocabulary" and gaining experience with solution patterns. Repeating problems in Gradigo's Quants mode until you have the patterns memorized will build more than enough skill.
This ability "transforms" in your post-MBA career
As I mentioned in a previous article, there is unfortunately not a single moment in MBA life where the Quants or Verbal study content is directly useful. But "mental math ability" and "calculation vision" are the one exception.
Why? Because in the consulting-industry job search — one of the most popular career paths after MBA graduation — this ability becomes a direct weapon.
Consulting interviews include a type of problem called "Fermi estimation." These questions measure how much "quantitative intuition" you have about phenomena, products, and services in the world. The goal is not to produce a precise answer, but to see whether you can reach a reasonable estimate quickly by making rational assumptions.
This is exactly the skill that lies on the extension of the "calculation vision" you trained in GMAT/GRE Quants.
A real example: "How many tennis balls fit in a Boeing 777?"
Let's work through the most famous Fermi estimation problem in an interview setting. The key constraint: you cannot look up any specs. All you have is your "intuition" and "mental math."
Step 1: Estimate the cabin volume of a Boeing 777 by feel
Start with the seat layout. Anyone who's flown economy knows the 3-4-3 configuration of ten seats per row. Each seat takes up roughly 50 cm wide × 80 cm deep (seat pitch) ≈ 4,000 cm².
How many rows? When you board a plane you see seat numbers. The impression is roughly A row to P row — let's say about 20 rows.
Ceiling height: standing up inside gives you a bit of headroom — about 2 m.
But the seat area alone doesn't give you the full cabin volume. Add aisles, the galley, lavatories, and overhead bins — these bring the total to roughly 2.5 times the seating area.
Putting it together:
200 seats × 0.4 m² (seat area) × 2.5 (adjustment factor) × 2 m (height) = 400 m³
Step 2: Estimate the volume of a tennis ball by feel
Picture gripping a tennis ball. The diameter is a bit smaller than your fist — about 7 cm. Balls are round, so they can't be packed without gaps. Think of a box just big enough to hold one ball: 7 cm × 7 cm × 7 cm.
7³ = 343 cm³ ≈ roughly 350 cm³
Step 3: Division — this is where mental math pays off
400 m³ = 4 × 10⁸ cm³
4 × 10⁸ ÷ 350? Calculation vision to the rescue.
4 ÷ 3.5 = 8 ÷ 7 ≈ 1.14
Multiply by 10⁶ (= 1 million) to get roughly 1.14 million.
You give your answer during the interview's five-minute mental-math window: "About 1 million."
Step 4: Verify — compare against the actual specs
After the interview, let's check the answer. The Boeing 777-200's official specs give a cabin interior width of 5.87 m, floor-to-ceiling height of about 2.2 m, and cabin length of about 45 m. Applying a factor of 0.8 for the cylindrical fuselage shape:
5.87 × 2.2 × 45 × 0.8 ≈ 465 m³
The official tennis ball diameter is 6.54–6.86 cm; using a cubic approximation of 6.7³ ≈ 301 cm³:
465,000,000 ÷ 301 ≈ about 1.54 million
Our intuition-only estimate of ~1.14 million vs. the spec-based result of ~1.54 million. The error is about 26%. The order of magnitude matches perfectly — a more than sufficient level of precision. The interviewer wants to know whether you can land in the range of "1 to 2 million," not whether the last digit is correct.
GMAT/GRE Quants and consulting Fermi estimation share the same essence: not the power to calculate precisely, but the power to estimate quickly. And that power is something anyone can develop through daily mental-math training.
Summary: Quants is a "waypoint," mental math is "a lifelong weapon"
The Quants score itself won't help you 1 mm in MBA life. But the "mental math ability" and "calculation vision" you sharpen while earning that score will be a lifelong weapon.
Not only for consulting Fermi estimation — rough-estimating budgets on the business floor, mentally computing the return on an investment deal, making split-second judgments about numbers in a negotiation — in all these moments, calculation vision will quietly but reliably come to your aid.
